Even greener
The potato is a sustainable choice. It has a very small Carbon footprint, compared to rice or wheat. And it gets even smaller now. We present you Even Greener; a selection of extra sustainable varieties with a lower impact on the environment.
The future starts in the ground
Together with our customers we looked at what requirements are truly important for sustainable varieties. We came up with 5 sustainable traits; Marketable yield, Fertilizer, Storablilty, Crop protection and Fresh water use.
Now we can finally measure and determine whether a variety is sustainable. Not defining by one single trait but by a balanced set of five.
In our Even Greener calculator, you indicate which traits are most important to you, and we provide a potato variety that meets these requirements. This gives you access to the best sustainable potato varieties.
Even Greener. The future starts in the ground.
Traits
-
Besides a high yield per hectare, there should be a low chance of rejection on quality issues from farm to fork. The quality should be accepted by consumers.
-
How much a variety can produce can be stimulated by fertilizers. Even Greener varieties use nutrients efficiently, reducing fertilizer waste and achieving a good yield and quality.
-
Even Greener varieties were selected to reduce the use of anti-sprouting inhibitors in cold store. They can be stored for a long period without losing external and internal qualities. The chance of waste is lower.
-
We breed varieties with resistances against potato diseases. Even Greener varieties have a high level of resistances so less crop protection chemicals are needed.
-
Climate change is making potato cultivation more challenging. Even Greener varieties can tolerate dry periods well and use water more efficiently.
